Contemporary Extension to a Period Home
Read moreAdam Knibb Architects were commissioned to undertake an appraisal study for the extension and refurbishment of a period house, with the ambition of creating a contemporary extension that carefully balances modern living with the character of the original house.
Open-Plan Living and Garden Connection
The design replaces an outdated conservatory with a full-width ground floor extension, significantly improving the functionality and flow of the home. This new addition creates a generous, flexible layout centred around an open-plan kitchen and dining space, designed as the social heart of the house. Large glazed openings strengthen the connection between the interior and the west-facing garden, allowing the living spaces to extend naturally outdoors.
Set on an east–west axis, the design responds carefully to the site’s orientation. Maximising natural daylight was a key driver, with the extension arranged to draw light deep into the plan and eliminate previously underused, darker areas. The result is a series of bright, welcoming spaces that evolve throughout the day, enhancing both comfort and usability.
While the rear extension adopts a contemporary architectural language, the front elevation remains respectful and understated, ensuring the house sits comfortably within its surroundings. This sensitive approach preserves the charm of the existing property while introducing modern detailing and improved spatial quality.
The design also carefully balances openness with privacy and security - an essential consideration for family living. Generous open-plan areas are complemented by more intimate, private zones, creating a home that supports both social interaction and quiet retreat.
