ABOUT

The brief for Semaphore Farm was to create a contemporary extension to a Grade II listed farmhouse that would provide a larger open-plan kitchen and living space, alongside a new study and bathroom, while carefully preserving the historic fabric of the original building. The existing layout no longer supported modern family living, and an extension offered the most appropriate way to introduce generous, flexible spaces without compromising the character of the listed structure.

Connecting Old and New Through a Lightweight Glass Link

A sensitive design approach was essential. The proposal introduces a lightweight glazed link that clearly distinguishes old from new while forming a subtle transition between the historic farmhouse and the contemporary addition. This delicate connection allows the extension to read as an independent architectural element, gently contrasting the traditional building without competing with it.

Working within a tight budget required a considered approach to construction. To minimise demolition and maximise efficiency, we explored prefabricated building technologies. The clients intended to undertake a self-build project, coordinating subcontractors and carrying out elements of the construction themselves. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) were therefore selected to create a highly efficient, prefabricated structural shell that could be quickly erected on site, providing a cost-effective and watertight envelope early in the build process.

Prefabricated SIPs Construction for an Efficient Self-Build

The SIPs system also offered excellent thermal performance and sustainability benefits. The external envelope is finished in Siberian larch cladding, paired with high-performance double glazing to ensure strong environmental performance while creating a warm and natural exterior appearance that sits comfortably within its rural setting.

Because SIPs rely on precise prefabrication, we worked closely with the client throughout the design process to carefully coordinate the building geometry and construction details. This collaborative approach ensured the design fully responded to the client’s brief while maintaining key architectural qualities such as generous natural light, well-proportioned spaces, and considered material finishes. Off-site fabrication also significantly reduced construction waste, while the shorter on-site build programme minimised environmental impact.

A Contemporary Family Home

The completed project transforms Semaphore Farm into a thoughtfully renovated family home. The contemporary extension sits confidently alongside the listed farmhouse, creating a clear dialogue between historic and modern architecture while delivering a bright, open-plan living space that reconnects the house with its surrounding landscape.
