A contemporary mixed-use design proposal for a narrow infill site in London, combining office space, a studio apartment and roof terrace.
Read moreNorwood is a design proposal that explores how an exceptionally narrow site in south London can be transformed into a contemporary mixed-use building. Measuring just 13 metres long by 3.2 metres wide, the project demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can unlock the potential of overlooked urban spaces while maintaining access to neighbouring properties.
The proposal combines flexible office accommodation with a compact studio apartment, creating a highly efficient building that makes the most of a challenging footprint.
Rather than treating the restricted site as a limitation, the design embraces its unique conditions. The accommodation is lifted above ground level, preserving covered parking and access beneath while creating light-filled spaces on the floors above.
A carefully positioned external spiral staircase provides independent access to each level, maximising internal floor area while simplifying circulation and meeting fire safety requirements.
Generous full-width glazing brings daylight deep into the building and opens both the office and apartment onto private outdoor spaces, culminating in a roof terrace with panoramic views across the surrounding neighbourhood.
The architectural expression is defined by a layered façade of dark textured cladding and translucent screening. This combination gives the building depth and visual lightness, allowing the upper storeys to recede against the sky while creating a subtly changing appearance throughout the day and into the evening.
Norwood demonstrates how inventive design can transform constrained urban sites into flexible, contemporary buildings that contribute positively to the evolving city.
