Contemporary timber clad extension and loft conversion to a bungalow

Adam Knibb Architects were approached to produce a design for an extension, loft conversion and full refurbishment of an existing bungalow.

A contemporary single storey, timber clad pod extension houses the kitchen, casual seating area and a relaxed bench dining table. Large sliding doors provide direct access to a rear patio for external eating. Dual aspect to views have been incorporated into the dining area, not only to the extensive rear garden but also to an internal courtyard outside the play room.

The new entrance to the property is framed via a new porch characterised by roof cut outs. The double height entrance space is top lit by a large glazed dormer window.

The roof of the existing property has been raised to accommodate a loft conversion, further providing much needed space, housing four bedrooms and a new family bathroom. A glazed apex window in the master bedroom provides view across the sedum roof and into the garden beyond.

Vertical timber cladding is used in reference to the surrounding trees and to provide a contemporary contrast to the existing red brick building; a sedum roof softens the extension at first floor level and helps minimise its impact within the surroundings.
