Adam Knibb Architects have completed the transformative extension and refurbishment of Cobham House, a contemporary redesign of a family home originally constructed in 2010. The project delivers a future-proof residence that is architecturally cohesive, environmentally responsible, and tailored to the evolving needs of its owners.
The brief called for a flexible home that harmonised with the existing architecture while integrating sustainable materials and technologies. Our approach focused on enhancing spatial flow, natural light, and energy performance, while respecting the property’s distinctive character and its setting within a conservation area.
The extension draws on the language of the existing building, retaining its clean lines and horizontal emphasis, while softening the palette with natural timber cladding and neutrally painted masonry. Ground floor additions are designed to feel seamless, maintaining privacy without overwhelming the original form. Large-format glazing and carefully framed views bring in natural light and connect the home to its leafy surroundings.
Internally, the home has been reconfigured to provide generous, light-filled spaces for modern family living. An open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area now connects fluidly to the garden, creating a strong dialogue between inside and out. Additional breakout spaces, a feature fireplace, and flexible rooms support both daily life and future adaptability.
