ABOUT

A Contemporary Addition Rooted in its Context

Situated within the Braishfield Conservation Area, Clayhill demonstrates how contemporary architecture can enhance a traditional home while remaining sensitive to its surroundings. The project replaces an outdated conservatory with a carefully considered extension that respects the character of the existing red-brick detached house and the wider Hampshire landscape.

The brief called for more than additional floor area. The clients wanted a home that embraced natural light, framed long views across the countryside and created a stronger connection between the interior and garden, while balancing open-plan family living with moments of privacy and retreat. The result is a bespoke architectural intervention that feels both timeless and intrinsically connected to its setting.

Designing Light, Flow and Connection

At the heart of the design is the careful choreography of movement through the home. Rather than relying on walls to define spaces, the architecture uses visual connections, changing perspectives and subtle thresholds to create a natural progression between public and private areas.

The existing kitchen and breakfast room now flow seamlessly into a new dining area, where expansive glazing on two elevations dissolves the boundary between inside and outside. Rooflights positioned at the junction between old and new draw daylight deep into the centre of the house, transforming previously enclosed spaces and creating a bright, interconnected family environment.

Views through the extension extend beyond the garden to the surrounding countryside, making the landscape an integral part of everyday living.

Contemporary Architecture with a Respect for Heritage

While unapologetically modern in its expression, the extension takes cues from the original architecture through proportion, materiality and alignment. Horizontal timber louvres establish privacy without severing visual connections to the garden, while carefully positioned datums relate to the existing building, creating continuity across old and new.

Externally, a dark-framed structural band wraps the extension to express a simple architectural form, extending beyond the building to define a covered terrace and strengthen the relationship between house, garden and swimming pool. Warm timber cladding contrasts with the crisp contemporary detailing, creating a composition that is refined yet sympathetic to the conservation area setting.

A Home for Modern Family Living

Clayhill is an exercise in balance — between openness and intimacy, contemporary design and contextual sensitivity, architecture and landscape. The extension transforms the way the house is experienced, filling the interior with natural light while creating spaces that are both sociable and calm.

Clayhill illustrates how a carefully crafted contemporary extension can transform the experience of an existing home — bringing together light, landscape and architecture to create a seamless environment for modern family life.
